At least 17 people lost their lives in West Bengal on Thursday night as heavy rains and thunderstorms lashed the state, affecting several districts.
According to the state's disaster management department, four people died in Burdwan district after being struck by lightning during the heavy rains.
Two lives were lost in Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas each. Paschim Medinipur and Howrah rural districts saw six fatalities. Most of the victims were farmers who were caught in the storm while being out of their homes.
The heavy downpour with strong thunderstorms started in various parts of South Bengal, including the capital city of Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Burdwan, and Murshidabad on Thursday evening.
The state's electricity supply was also severely impacted. The disaster management department is taking necessary measures to assist those affected by the storm.
